Restream at a glance
Restream is live-production infrastructure for taking a program already being produced and making it available across more than one destination. Its browser-based Restream Studio can be the production surface: hosts enter a web studio, bring in guests, arrange branded elements, and send the finished program live. Alternatively, a team can send an existing encoder feed to Restream and use it principally as a relay. That distinction is useful for a show that needs broad distribution without asking a laptop to originate several separate outbound streams.
Restream does not create video imagery from a text prompt or synthesize a live scene. It combines, routes, and packages sources that a producer supplies. A camera, screen, media asset, guest contribution, or external encoder remains the source of the program. The pricing material lists multistreaming, Studio, Upload & Stream, and Clips as distinct products. Treat clips and automation as follow-up or show-operation functions, not as evidence of a generative-video system.
Live production and distribution
For a live run, decide whether Restream Studio or an external desktop encoder owns the switch. Studio suits a presenter-led interview, webinar, or branded talk show where browser guests and layouts are sufficient. An external encoder is usually the stronger control point when capture cards, complex audio routing, local media playback, plug-ins, or a dedicated technical director are required. Restream can still be the multistream layer in that second design. It is not a desktop encoder: the official Studio API explicitly calls Studio an in-browser live-production tool.
Plan limits affect the distribution design. The Free plan is listed at two simultaneous channels and carries Restream branding. Standard lists three channels, Professional five, and Business eight; the pricing page also lists different recording and team features at higher tiers. These are entitlements, not a guarantee that every destination accepts a selected codec, resolution, title, or duration. Confirm each platform account, destination policy, and custom RTMP endpoint before advertising a simulcast.
Guests can add their own channels on plans that include guest destinations, useful when an interview partner wants the event on an organization-owned account. It also adds coordination: agree on titles, authorization, moderation, and the moment each party takes the show live. A relay does not remove platform-specific chat or rights management. Rehearse network loss, a guest browser failure, and a destination that refuses ingest.
Overlays, automation, and limits
Restream Studio supports captions, backgrounds, brand overlays, QR codes, and scrolling tickers. The public Studio API documents create, read, update, and delete operations for several asset types. That is meaningful automation evidence: a production system can template or update graphics data without rebuilding each item manually. It is not proof of an API for every show control, encoder configuration, or destination-management action. Design integrations around documented endpoints.
The Studio API documents on-screen caption assets, but that evidence does not establish automatic speech recognition, live translation, or closed-caption compliance. Treat captions in this profile as producer-managed Studio graphics and verify the intended audience-accessibility path separately. Automatic clip creation is similarly a repurposing feature, not generated live video.
Choose Restream when distribution breadth and a browser show surface outweigh local engineering control. Choose StreamYard for a comparable browser workflow, OBS Studio for a desktop mixer and plug-in ecosystem, or Streamlabs Desktop for a creator-oriented desktop package. Test destinations, guest devices, branding, recording entitlement, and recovery behavior under real upstream bandwidth.
